Effect of smoking cessation on mortality of older men and women with coronary artery disease.

Patients of 55 years of age or older were enrolled in the study. The oldest patient was 83 years old. All of them had undergone coronary angiography and thereby documented coronary artery disease. At least one coronary segment had shown a narrowing of the luminal diameter by 50 percent or more. They had not had coronary bypass surgery before inclusion in the study. Subjects enrolled in the CASS randomized trial of coronary bypass surgery were excluded.
